The sun temple of konark is one of the unique temples around the world because of its planned execution and engineering brilliance.... However, legend has it that the temple was constructed by Samba, the son of Lord Krishna. It is said that Samba was afflicted by leprosy, brought about by his father’s curse on him. After 12 years of penance, he was cured by Surya, the Sun God, in whose honour he built the magnificent Konarak sun temple.
It is the site of the 13th-century Sun Temple (also known as the Black Pagoda), built in black granite by King Narasimhadeva I (AD 1236-1264) of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. The temple is a World Heritage Site. It takes the form of the chariot of Surya (Arka), the sun god, and is heavily decorated with stone carving. The entire complex was designed in the form of a huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels. The entrance is guarded by two lions, which are each shown crushing a war elephant. Each elephant in turn lies on top of a human body. The temple symbolises the majestic stride of the Sun god. At the entrance of the temple is a Nata Mandir. This is where the temple dancers used to perform dances in homage to the Sun god. All around the temple, there are various floral and geometric patterns
Magnets and Floating Idol ?
The uniqueness of the temple lies in the fact that between every two stone pieces(used to construct the temple), there lies an Iron plate (this can be clearly seen). The temples higher floors have been reinforced using massive Iron beams. This fantastic effort in human perseverance took 1200 workers 12 years to complete and even then, legend has it that the ’’MukhShela’’ (Peak) of the main temple had to be installed by the 12 year old son of the Chief Architect. The said peak being a 52 ton magnet. This magnet was the reason the entire edifice endured the harsh conditions (being on the sea front) for centuries without being worse for wear. These magnets were later removed by the british for acquiring the magnetic stone, which had an idol floating in between.....the rays of sun would reflect from the diamond at the center of this idol...that's why the name koN-ark...meaning angle of the sun (ray)
Other legends state that magnetic effects of the lodestone disturbed ships' compasses so that they did not function correctly. To save their shipping, the Portugese voyagers took away the lodestone, which was acting as the central stone and keeping all the stones of the temple wall in balance. Due to its displacement, the temple walls lost their balance and eventually fell down.
So what happened to magnet and the idol where it is now? guys any information on this please comment

quite interesting & informative
probably stolen by the british and sitting somewhere in a statelyhome attic....
I have read a similar story about the Somnath temple.according to the story when Mahmud of Ghazani attacked Somnath, he was surprized to see the idol hanging in the air without any support. When a stone was removed from the roof the idol tilted to a side. It may only be a legend. Difficult to prove.
