Does Eating Meat Increases Global Warming ?

What is the relation between meat and global warming this was the question came to my mind when i saw the heading of an article in guardian site ? where it is said that one meat free day per week will reduce the global warming drastically!!!

Chair person of the united intergovernmental panel on climate change DR. Rajendra pachauri said people should reduce meat consumption even further pachauri who re elected as chairman for second time said diet changes was important because of the huge green house gas emissions and other environmental problems - including habitat destruction - associated with rearing cattle and other animals. It was relatively easy to change eating habits compared to changing means of transport, he said.

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions. These are generated during the production of animal feeds, for example, while ruminants, particularly cows, emit methane, which is 23 times more effective as a global warming agent than carbon dioxide. The agency has also warned that meat consumption is set to double by the middle of the century.

'In terms of immediacy of action and the feasibility of bringing about reductions in a short period of time, it clearly is the most attractive opportunity,' said Pachauri. 'Give up meat for one day [a week] initially, and decrease it from there,' said the Indian economist, who is a vegetarian.

However, he also stressed other changes in lifestyle would help to combat climate change. 'That's what I want to emphasise: we really have to bring about reductions in every sector of the economy.'

So guys what do you think does not eating meat is better or not using our vehicle is better ? i think not using our cars for a day not only saves money but also contributes in minimizing the global warming!!! then why these scientists comes with these bizzare theories instead of pointing out where to cut down the problem?

Sir, Friend

I read Ur post on what learned had to say... after reading it... as a commoner i fail to understand...why are we in today's world ... writing down and pointing out notes on what can be reduced and avoided and banned..(though it aint bad to do so )... why the world is moved to decoding and reverse engineering ... when production and forward engineering still an option open for human kind.... ... what i meant when i said this is that ... why aren't we growing jungles, forest, trees,... why are the barren forest not given its right share of fertility... why aren't the trees and soil having an intercourse through humankind... when barren forest is allll over... i feel guilty to travel my village into the Deccan plateau ... since i seee naked mountains stripped of their attire of trees so that humans prostitute through them their needs...

Very Very Very informative. I give up meat for 6 days and enjoy it mostly only on Sundays. I will try giving it up even on Sundays. I consume chicken, is it harmful in anyway apart from the harm that is caused to the chicken race?

I in fact have become a weekday vegetarian just because it doesnt suit my stomach. but, i dont recommend the theory that meat increases global warming and if u stop eating meat you will save the planet. Instead I would say grow trees and do organic forming!
