Suicide Song Gloomy Sunday by Rezso Seress

do people commit suicide listening to music or song ? This is the story of a song that causes people to commit suicide. Hungarian composer Reszo Seress wrote the song Gloomy Sunday, apparently while depressed and during an actual gloomy Sunday, and soon after people started turning up dead.

The sheet music was reportedly found close by, or witnesses heard or saw them listening to the song performed, sung, or even whistled, merely hours before their death. All unsubstantiated gossip of course, but interesting. Since then, 1932, the song has been much recorded, including the most famous rendition by Billie Holiday,

There have been several urban legends regarding the song over the years, mostly involving it being allegedly connected with various numbers of suicides, and radio networks reacting by purportedly banning the song. However, most of these claims are unsubstantiated. It is also rumored the music played without lyrics will put the listener into a deep sleep and induce vivid dreams and nightmares. The nightmares usually consist of falling or flying sensations.

In 1968, Rezső Seress, the original composer, jumped to his death from his apartment. His obituary in the New York Times mentions the song's notorious reputation

In 1997 Billy Mackenzie, vocalist with Scottish band The Associates (who recorded a cover of Holiday's version in 1982), committed suicide near his father's home in Dundee.

I cant comment on the songs nor i have an idea why many people committed suicide after hearing this song i felt somewhat heart poking and heard more than 3 times but i am still here ;) have linked the youtube version of this song listen to it.... and do post the comment if your are still alive and planning for suicide? post the comment and then continue ;) so that people come to know it is song in deed the reason for suicide!!

hey, did everyone committed suicide? nobody left a comment!

i am depressed, and a bit suicidal at times. my fiance warned me not to listen to this song because of my being suicidal. i just braved it today, listening to this. i was kinda scared at first, because it might really make me commit suicide. but well, im still here. it's just creepy..in a way that it makes me go back to the time when it was made. like, when everything is in black and white? and thinking of all those stories of people who died bec. of this song. trying to imagine what they must have felt then. it is creepy, and like what you said, "heart-poking." but i think billy holiday's is creepier than the original. i just feel... weird...but not suicidal. that's all. maybe i'm just not that depressed unlike those people before. maybe they could just relate to the song, and they had so much heartache and found it difficult to live in this world. but just trying hard every day. and so when they heard this song, everything came crushing to them and convinced them to leave all the miseries behind.
